Water Meter Installation: Chicago’s New World Order

by g4allblog 0 Comments

The City of Chicago’s method to get property owners to install water meters is: Keep jacking up the non-metered flat rate until they cry “uncle”, as I just did.

The water meter was installed Tuesday, July 15. I’ve now used 129 gallons since it went in, which means I’m on track to use a little over 1000 gallons in two months (it pays to be a bachelor). Since the city bills only a few dollars for every thousand gallons used, it’s a great deal. I should have done it earlier, except I listened to people who have multiple bathrooms, whose kids must spend half the day in the shower, who are watering a half acre of lawn, and must have a slow leak from every faucet. Of course, their metered water bills went up.

None of our homes have had meters since they were built in 1956, so this is a totally new experience for me. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Water Meter: Equipment Autopsy #67

http://thegeekgroup.org/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss – Following up our tear down of a power meter, Chris demonstrates a practice in tenacity by managing to eventually take apart a water meter. Along the way we find out how it measures the water intake through the use of a pump and a magnet, have fun with a dremel tool, and study just how the meter would talk to a technician recording its measurements.
